Founded in 1994, Tomato House has been deeply rooted in Macao for three decades and is one of the city’s representative long-established Macanese-Portuguese restaurants. The brand embodies Macao’s local culinary heritage. Its cuisine differs from both traditional Portuguese cuisine and Macanese cuisine while retaining certain classic elements, thereby forming a distinctive Macao-style Portuguese culinary identity.
The owner’s family originates from Hac Sa Village in Coloane. His great-grandfather, Ip Leong, was the second village headman of Hac Sa Village and once lived beside the Portuguese military barracks in Hac Sa. The family was not only skilled in Portuguese and Macanese culinary techniques but also operated a Chinese restaurant, accumulating extensive experience in Chinese cuisine. Drawing upon this background, the owner used Chinese culinary techniques as a foundation to refine and develop signature dishes such as “Alibaba” baked chicken fillet with house special sauce, fried bacalhau (salted cod) with shredded potato, Portuguese baked beef brisket with curry sauce, and Portuguese serradura pudding. These creations have made Macanese-Portuguese cuisine, which blends Eastern and Western influences, an important symbol of local food culture.
